On May 6, 2011, the PiperSport aircraft being flown by a pilot hired to fly the aircraft from Fort Meyers, Florida to Joliet, Illinois crashed in Spring Hill, Florida killing the young pilot. Following an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB), it was determined that the canopy was in the open position at the time of impact. There have been numerous other reports of the canopy of this type of aircraft coming open inadvertently in flight.
