On April 13, 2016, the Britten-Norman BN-2T Turbine Islander aircraft operated by Sunbird Aviation as a commuter flight from Oksapmin Airport to Kiunga Airport in Papua New Guinea crashed near the runway at Kiunga Airport. The pilot and 11 passengers have died as a result of the crash – 9 on impact and 3 dead upon arrival at Kiunga Hospital.
