On December 28, 2014, the Airbus A320-216 aircraft being operated as by AirAsia as Flight 8501 from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore crashed into the Java Sea killing all 162 persons on board. According to the KNKT, the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee, the A320 stalled during an unusually steep climb and could not recover. The aircraft climbed at a rate of 6,000 feet per minute and stalled when it aircraft reached 38,000 feet.
