The mental health of airline pilots needs to be better monitored and the financial impacts of losing a pilot's licence for medical reasons should be mitigated to help prevent a repeat of last year's tragic Germanwings crash, say French aviation investigators. All 150 passengers and crew on Germanwings flight 9525 from Barcelona to Dusseldorf died in March last year when first officer Andreas Lubitz intentionally flew the A320 into the French Alps after locking the captain out of the flight deck.

U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) and Ways and Means Committee chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) late last week jointly introduced a bill that would extend the FAA’s authorization through July 15 and the excise taxes through March 31, 2017. The extension, the second such stop-gap measure, has been widely expected as Congress faces a March 31 deadline to act on FAA authorization.

A group of passengers have sued American Airlines Group Inc. (AAL) after their plane caught fire on Oct. 28. The fire occurred right before the flight was set to take off from Chicago O’Hare airport to Miami. American Airline spokesperson Leslie Scott said the fire was caused by an engine-related mechanical issue. The passengers are also suing Boeing Co. (BA), which built the plane, and General Electric Co. (GE), which manufactured the engine.

Eighteen passengers who escaped an engine fire aboard an American Airlines 767 jet at O'Hare International Airport last month have sued the manufacturers and the carrier. The lawsuit, filed in Cook County court Monday, claims a jet engine part built by GE Aviation Systems was defective, dangerous and caused a "catastrophic failure." The lawsuit also names American Airlines and Boeing Co.
